Port St. John Elementary School was projected to open in August of 1986. However students attended double sessions in morning and afternoon shifts at Coquina Elementary in Titusville. The school first opened its doors on October 27th. The official name was Challenger7 Elementary School, named in memory of the fallen astronauts.
It was lead by Julia Bumgarner and assistant principal Larry Graves. The school design reflected the current thinking of back to the basics with sturdy buildings, large, spacious self-contained classrooms and lots of storage space. Its curriculum included art, music and physical education, with a multi-purpose facility.
